THE CLOCK
By Christian Marclay’s

Christian Marclay’s The Clock is a digital collage connected through a constant theme. The 24 hour looping video is a collection of cinema, all of which are integrated through the similarity of bearing a clock. The clock through out the movie is at all times adherent to local time which brings the assorted clips of cinema together to produce a whole.

The magic of The Clock comes from Marclay’s ability to blend a series of film fragments and use them to create an apparently seamless video. Marclay is able to achieve this calculated mix through the consistent theme of a clock with heavy visual ties and clever audio blends. Marclay utilised his musical background to create an entirely new score from the audio found within the array of fragmented video clips. This enabled the movie to transition smoothly through the different video clips (Tate, n.d.). However, it is the visual tie to the theme of the clock which reminds us time and time again that these various video clips are now just one video.

The Clock allows us as an audience a unique opportunity to broaden the way we view connections. Marclay has orchestrated The Clock to make connections between wildly different clips of cinema. This encourages us to look beyond a narrow line of sight and link objects, places and faces together in ways of which we might not otherwise do.
HOME PERCEPTION BY AIDAN WELSH

Home Perception utilises a central visual theme, similar to how The Clock ties their clips back to various clocks. However, within Home Perception, this theme is more constant. Home Perception’s theme is a house with all shots exhibiting one aspect of the home. This constant theme and similarity allows for the fragments of video to feel like one. A heavy focus on the audio was also necessary to allow for the fragmented video to be a whole. The timing of the beat of the chosen song, c.l.u.s.t.e.r. by Cold, and the transition of the fragmented video was synchronised to allow for the changes to feel smooth and natural. With combination of these two techniques of audio and visual themes, Home Perception is able to create one video out of many.

Home Perception is about sharing the of experience of living within a home. By utilising varying shots of different aspects of the home, the film aims to bring the viewer within the house. The shots have been aimed to draw the viewer in with visually appealing shots to create a fascinating experience despite the lack of movement within the video.
